Sport and participation

Helping children and young adults participate in sport

Sport can build fitness, confidence, friendships and belonging. Physiotherapy can help bridge the gap between basic movement skills and the demands of the activity someone wants to join.

Skills may include

The exact focus depends on the sport and the participant.

  • Running, stopping and changing direction
  • Jumping, landing and balance
  • Ball skills and movement planning
  • Strength and endurance
  • Pacing, confidence and safe participation

Practise in context

Where suitable, sessions can occur at home, at school, in a park or in another community setting. This makes it easier to practise the actual surface, equipment and movement demands involved.

Participation comes first

The aim is not to make every person move the same way. The aim is to find useful strategies, build capacity and support participation that is safe, enjoyable and meaningful.
